Toruń 2016 - the European Capital of Culture

As world-class unique, the Old Town of Toruń has been enlisted on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Now the city of Toruń faces the opportunity to obtain the European Capital of Culture title in 2016. What it means is that European Union will grant two European cities a 12-month financial aid directed at organizing prestigious cultural and artistic meetings. That is why this unique medieval city together with the whole Kujawsko-Pomorskie District is preparing wide array of cultural, historical and artistic events.

Other polish cities have also declared the wish to participate in the contest. Among them are: Gdańsk, Poznań, Lublin, Łódź, Szczecin, Warszawa. The purpose of this contest is to find Europe’s cultural heritage and to present the assets of local cultural and social life.

In its way to the title Toruń co-operates with Spanish Pampeluna. The choice of the winning cities is based on the choices of 13 independent experts. We hope that the decision to choose one Spanish and one Polish city due at the brink of 2010 will prove happy for the region by appointing Toruń Europe’s Capital of Culture.
