Kikół

In his letter dated on 6.07.1827 and addressed to his family in Warsaw, the future composer mentioned that he had stayed in the manor house of Karol Zboiński in Kikół and played in the great room (so-called Knight Room) for the numerously gathered audience. Chopin stayed for a couple of days in Kikół to rest there on his way to Gdańsk.

The first mention of the village of Kikół dates back to 1236 and it relates to the castellany, which existed there for a short period of time. From 1433 to 1793 the village of Kikół included the royal and noble properties.Around 1685 Wojciech Jan Zboiński became the owner of both parts and the village of Kikół became a nest for his family until the half of the 19th century. In 1800 Franciszek Ksawery Zboiński purchased from Ludwika (Skarbek coat of arms) the village of Izbica, which made it possible for the latter to purchase Żelazowa Wola. Stanisław Nałęcz was he last owner of the property with the area of approximately 500 ha before the Second World War. At the end of the 18th century Ignacy Antoni Zboiński erected a palace in the site of the former manor house from the 17th century in Kikół. The palace is a Classicist edifice with two stories. It stands on the escarpment at the pool. In the largest room of the palace, so-called Knight Room, in which young Fryderyk Chopin played the piano during his visit in Kikół, there is still well preserved polychrome decoration dating back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The palace is surrounded by a park dating back to the first half of the 19th century with its farm buildings, which, except for the chicory drying house, were dismantled shortly after the Second World War. Presently the palace is a private property and any visits should be agreed with its owner.

In the site of the former keep located high over the level of Kikolskie Lake there is a church of Saint Adalbert, Bishop and Martyr dating back to the years 1904 – 1909,. The church was built of brick in the neo-Gothic style in the place of the former church dating back to the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. In the church there are well preserved epitaphs and tomb plates dedicated to members of the Zboiński family and brought from the previous church. In the cemetery adjacent to the church there are tombs of the Nałęcz, Dziewanowski, Kamiński and Krasiński families. Leaving Kikół and going towards the village of Zbójno, we can admire a view to the wide valley of the Lubieńka river on the left side of the road.
